Installation Volume Provider

Installation on the server

There are 2 versions of the resource manager. To install one of this versions, please contact your system administrator. The installation procedure for freebsd unix is described in the file “INSTALL”. An rpm installation file would be used for linux systems.

Volume providers

The rescan of virtual magazines - in order to see possible changes to the virtual magazine - requires the installation and configuration of a volume provider on every server hosting one or more virtual magazines. A volume provider is a computer program that knows which directories on the server are virtual magazines and watches them for changes. If the volume provider spots a change, it notifies the Resource Manager server of this change, so that it will displayed correctly for the user. The volume provider will notice new or missing files in directories serving as virtual magazines. A change in size of an ISO image will not result in a notification to the Resource Manager.

The volume provider is a Java program and consequently requires a complete Java-installation (JRE 1.5) on every server it is supposed to run.

For convenient startup of the volume provider, just invoke rm-nsis-1.0.2.setup.exe. Click Next> in each of the following windows.

Tasks for the Resource Manager node

The Resource Manager node in the tree is the top of the Resource Manager network. Consequently, you can add elements coming next down the hierarchy — jukeboxes and virtual magazines. Adding a jukebox is a somewhat advanced topic because it might involve mechanically connecting the physical device to the Resource Manager server. Adding a virtual magazine is a priviliged activity that requires a username and a password, usually limited to Resource Manager administrators.
